About Me:
I first learned about permaculture 3 years ago. At first I thought that it was some crazy group of people actually trying to grow some food in this inhospitable clime. Turns out that I was partially right. There are a LOT of people growing their own food SUCESSFULLY in Phoenix as well as keeping chickens, living simply, doing without excess, etc. I was inspired by both the concept of permacultre (holistic sustainability) and by the folks practicing it.

Nowadays I spend time volunteering for the Phoenix Permaculture Guild in whatever capacity needed. Along with Myron Mykyta, I developed this social network site. I've also been instrumental in setting up classes for the space at the Downtown Phoenix Public Market. I'm always looking to build community and collaborations with other groups and non-profits. We currently work with Resoucres for Health/Pollution Solutions (kids), the Downtown Phoenix Public Market, Desert Marigold School and Earthminders. If you have a group that would be interested in some sort of collaboration, let me know.

OK - so here's the deal - email me at phoenixhomesteader@gmail.com if you:
--have any suggestions for classes
--want to collaborate with us
--have suggestions for this website
--have a homesite that might make a good tour site

There's more, I'm sure, but you get the drift.

Permaculture musings

The Phoenix Permaculture Guild holds a special place in my heart for a number of reasons - not the least of which is that it is becoming a community resource to train people in the skills necessary to transition to a more sustainable way of living. Now some may think we have a choice whether or not to live sustainably. To me, the question is moot. The time for choices has passed and it… Continue

Onions, Eggplants, Pluots and Tomatillos

As I continue along the path of growing my own food, I have successes and I have failures. Right now I probably average more failures than successes. I guess I have to admit to being a serial mass-murderer of plant life! (watch for the FBI "Most Wanted" poster!) One of the crops that I have yet to master is tomatoes. Can't seem to get that one right. They mock me. I've tried many different locations and they die - either from hot or from cold (in the winter). It's maddening. I don't even LIKE t… Continue

Gas, Electric and Water - a journey to conserve.

It seems like everyone's trying to cut back, conserve and generally reduce their use of those pricey utilities. I'm no different. In fact I started tracking my water, gas and electric usage in earnest about a year ago. Below are my "stats to date" compared to 2006 and 2007 values. Gas Gas season is pretty much over for me even though my stove, water heater and dryer are all gas. In the summer, however, I hang washing on the line (actually I do this MOST of the year except sometim… Continue

What's in YOUR laundry?

In a spate of summer cleaning I've been doing a lot of washing of things like area rugs, seat cushions and the like. In other words, I've been doing more laundry than usual. Fortunately for me, my washing machine is outdoors on my back porch. It's connected up to a 55 gallon recycled food… Continue

The shade house cometh!

Here in Phoenix - land of 100+ days of over 100 degree weather - summer shade is a much coveted commodity. People go to great lengths to park under the meager shade of saplings in parking lots or stand in the shade of a palm tree trunk at a bus stop. Yep - we're pretty desperate for SHADE! So one of the permaculture projects I've been looking forward to doing for a long time is building a shade house across the back of my house (Eastern/morning exposure) to provide my bedroom with some passive c… Continue

coop tour sounds like a great idea. We live in the south arcadia area and have had chickens for 15 years. We love our chickens! We'd love to be a part it. Jill Green

Hi Jennifer -

The logo group is not showing up on any of my pages. Any idea why and, more importantly, how to get it back? Thanks...

I've deided you need something to do with your free time... like make us a contacts page! Names, service, numbers/email...for stalkers like me who want to get in touch w/ Mr. Titmus or whomever, and can't get our lazy butts to class, or Mr. Mykata, who want their site asessed and their rose-colored glasses installed - etc, etc. Problems with this, such as privacy and keeping it up-to date abound, but I know you can do it, Jennifer! Heh.

Seriously, I hate to keep asking for contact info for people when I know you've probably already given it out to noobz a jillion times. I don't know whether to ask anyway or root around the forums like a little piglet hoping someone else asked already. Maybey people could list themselves in the Bazaar secion - but how would you keep it from turning into an adzone?

That's great - I'll stop by there and pick it up this weekend. I did hear a rumor that we might get a Changing Hands downtown - that would be incredible!

Yo Jen. Have a zillion people gotten in on this permaculture gig in the last month, or is it just me?! Looks like this is an idea whose time has come...

Thanks Jennifer! The yard is very nice, although I can't take credit for it.
I look forward to chatting with you soon.
