Linda AZ Because everyone needs more banana bread

Good Morning! Had a bit of a baking adventure this morning that has turned out well so I thought I would share it. I read several recipes about baking with sprouted wheat berries, and then sort of took off on my own this morning with the intent being banana bread. I don't bake in absolutes, so you may have to wing it a bit if you try this. As usual with my cooking, I've added all kinds of comments. 2/3 cup of sprouted wheat berries (plus a little more, since the jar was nearly empty. Sprouts w… Continue

Linda AZ Babysteps and Changes

I'm relatively new to this site. I'm relatively new to permaculture, sustainable living. We've wanted to, and we kept planning for that "someday" when we have the right property, "someday" when we have more room, "someday" when we don't have to ask permission for chickens and goats. Sometime this summer we realized, that it was ok to start RIGHT NOW. Raised beds half full of desert concrete dirt spent the summer being layered like lasagna gardens, composting down, until a friend recently said,… Continue

Rob Making Your Own Adobe Bricks

I'd been wondering how to build walls out of natural materials from my yard. I didn't have enough rocks, so adobe bricks came to mind. We definitely have enough caliche soil to make our own adobe - but how? Here's a great step-by-step guide, and it looks pretty easy. I'll definitely be trying this. http://www.ehow.com/how_2314179_make-bricks.html Continue

Rob Building The Soil

Over the summer I cordoned off about a third of the back yard and dug out six garden beds. I'm in the process now of building of soil. Scott MacComb Going for a healthier diet.

I have decided to try aspects of a Vegan diet and want to share my experiences here to help keep me on the path. It has been one week and I think I am getting the hang of it. So here's my parameters -- this isn't necessarily a "by-the-book" vegan diet -- I'm making up some of my own rules to fit the lifestyle I am trying to achieve. - Minimal to no meat products or meat bi-products. - Minimal to no processed foods, within reason. - Minimal caffeine (just because). - Organic when available (try… Continue

Dana Mesquite Milling

It was so exciting to finally get all our mesquite pods ground into flour today - our first time. We obtained about 5lbs+. We will package some for the freezer, relatives and are eargerly reviewing recipes to try. I'll keep you posted. I think mesquite brownies will be first. We enjoyed the mesquite coconut cake at the market today and while there purchased some yummy bread, veggies and tamales. We ate some tamales at lunch and couldn't resist having them on the side our homemade chilli and hom… Continue

TERRI LARSEN Stop Big Ag in the White House - Say no to Monsanto - CropLife

A serious breach of trust has occurred. During his campaign, President Obama spoke routinely about closing the revolving door between powerful corporate interests and government service. Ruthanne Gold-Winters Lavender

While living in Oregon, I grew English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). I haven’t gotten to the point of growing the Lavender here but I have read that Spanish Lavender( Lavandula Stoechas) grows very well and it’s a better choice for making oils for the bath and aroma therapy, where the traditional Lavender ( English/Common) are better suited in the kitchen and make a wonderful infused cooking oil. There is so much to learn about how to grow your garden here. I think I am going to start with… Continue

Doreen Pollack Trouble Lurks in the Garden

No picture today with this post because I don't want to gross you out - my swollen, red left foot is the reason for this note. First - I have already been chastised by my fellow gardener friends. Seems like the guys had less sympathy and did more scolding than the woman. Second - I feel a little foolish even sharing this with you. I mean, come-on, I am a PROFESSIONAL (aren't I?). But if I don't share this with you, there is a good chance this could happen to you! So here goes - I stepped on a… Continue

I've never seen ants do that kind of damage, how bizarre. You can cover the tomatoes when frost threatens and maybe they will survive. Good luck and good pics.

Sorry Janine, the bees are spoken for already. I really with I could keep them, I've never had so many bees on my squash blossoms before and would be great for the squash and melons next year but just not enough room.
