Lavender

While living in Oregon, I grew English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). I haven’t gotten to the point of growing the Lavender here but I have read that Spanish Lavender( Lavandula Stoechas) grows very well and it’s a better choice for making oils for the bath and aroma therapy, where the traditional Lavender ( English/Common) are better suited in the kitchen and make a wonderful infused cooking oil.

There is so much to learn about how to grow your garden here. I think I am going to start with… Continue

Pictures galore

As you can see from my page I love visuals. Images give me a huge amount of inspiration to move forward with my own Projects. I think it has to do with the years of owning an Art Gallery in Los Angeles.

Now I am just a humdrum banker these days, surrounded by lifeless cubicles without an ounce of expression.

This weekend Chris and I had a visit to Don's house. I love the fact that he has his garden plan laid out in a good-sized format. This way he can expand easily on his concept, change his v… Continue

Ruthanne's easy Salsa

Ruthanne’s Bean, Corn & Pineapple Salsa

Large can of Mexican stewed tomatoes (chopped, use half the juice) or fresh tomatoes work great as well.
Small can of diced pineapple (use half the juice) or fresh pineapple.
Four cloves of garlic chopped finely
Half-small onion chopped finely
Cilantro if desired
Small can of nib lets corn (drained) or cooked fresh corn cut from the cob. I love the roasted corn taste.
Small can of Black or Red beans (small beans, drained)
Add salt & pepper to tast… Continue

Ruthanne, it looks like you've lived in a lot of different places. It certainly makes a person adaptable, doesn't it? I've lived most of my life in Albuquerque, NM, so gardening here in the low desert has been a real challenge for me. I've certainly had more failures than successes. We rented a few homes in Scottsdale before we were able to purchase our home here in Mesa. I tried to make improvements to the properties, and even composted, but always kept in mind that it was temporary. Good thing, because the subsequent tenants always let it go. We're having a wonderful time working on our new house, always looking for ways to utilize the materials we have at hand as well as planning for the long-term benefit of our home and property.

Thank you for the sweet compliment. My husband and 15-year-old son designed and built it before we got our chickens. We plan to turn that entire corner of the yard under the fig tree into an aviary. We are in the process of rebuilding the fence around our property with recycled tongue-in-groove from the original fence. The aviary will be our first project when the fence to the alley has been completed.
