Wow, Rob, I am cowed by your effort. You and your family will be having an amazing garden full of bounty!

Thanks for sharing that, Rob! It does look relatively easy. I know my soil sure feels like clay - I need a pick to dig in it. I wonder if I could just mix straw with it straight? Do you think the caliche is enough to allow us to do that? I don't kno…

So horribly sad. It's been nine months since the landslides but the danger remains. I hear this area was beautiful; I'm sure many parts of it still are.

Today has been just one day to address climate change. Environmental stewardship isn't an event, it's a way of life.

You have to love this. Despite its varied membership, the US Chamber of Commerce is run by right-wingers who then use members' dues to promote a right wing political agenda - including Bush-era environmental policy. I imagined US Chamber of Commerce…

That is awesome! I had a discussion with the local farm bureau here about the Monsanto backed bill that is currently making its way through congress. They had no idea such a bill existed, much less who was behind it. Perhaps they will not win this o…

Potentially great news: both the DoJ and DoA are investigating potentially anti-competitive practices by Monsanto. This investigation won't stop them - remember that Monsanto has many, many well-placed friends in both government and industry - but i…

Potentially great news. Encouraging too that Farm Bureau is potentially an ally; they have been an obstacle to progress on other issues.

Making Your Own Adobe Bricks

I'd been wondering how to build walls out of natural materials from my yard. I didn't have enough rocks, so adobe bricks came to mind. We definitely have enough caliche soil to make our own adobe - but how? Here's a great step-by-step guide, and it looks pretty easy. I'll definitely be trying this.

Building The Soil

Over the summer I cordoned off about a third of the back yard and dug out six garden beds. I'm in the process now of building of soil.
Bed One: 40' long x 2' wide x 3' deep
Beds Two and Three: 17' x 3'9" x 3'
Bed Four: 17' x 3'9" x 2'
Bed Five: 5' x 3'9" x 3'
Bed Six: 5' x 3'9" x 2'
The strange wid… Continue

Designing A Vegetable Garden, Week Four Notes

YAY! At long last I found my missing Week Four notes. Here goes:

Mulch doesn't have to be chopped or chipped plant matter - also consider using LIVING mulch. Not only will the plants roots break up the soil, but its leaves will shade the soil and help it retain moisture. Some plants that are especially good for use as living mulch include Apache Hubbard squash, Anazasi beans, amaranth, and native gourds. Note that beans (leguminous plants)will be especially helpful by adding nitrogen to the soi… Continue

Designing a Vegetable Garden Class, Week Three Notes

Need mulch? Tree chipping companies have to pay to dispose of their chips so may deliver to you free of charge as a win / win.

Rooftop gardening was discussed, and it was mentioned that some plants might hang from the roof. Important: the roof must be very well supported in order to carry the weight of earth, water and plants! Idea: we could plant native gourds in large containers on our 2nd floor deck, then let the vines hang rather than cl… Continue

This time of year, it's easy to drive around ABQ and find bagged leaves waiting for disposal by the city, at least that was the case a few years back. You only have another week or two to collect them before they're gone for another year ....

I really thought this was clever too! I would think that Craig's List would have many of these listed pretty cheap. I believe that they had 3 chickens, but this setup could handle quite a bit more, and it looks so darn cute!
