Healthier Eggs - Study Finds Pasture Eggs more Nutritious!

I'm sure many of you know that the eggs from your backyard flock are much healthier than the conventional factory-farm egg, but now we have some indication of how much better!

Testing done by Mother Earth News in 2007 concluded that most of the eggs currently sold in supermarkets are nutritionally inferior to eggs produced by hens raised on pasture.

Compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised on pasture (that would include… Continue

How to build an Herb Spiral

Phenomenal example of an Herb Spiral at Joan Baron's home

Hi All, I have been asked by many people (most recently Martha last night) about herb spirals. They are a beautiful and productive use of space for the home permaculturalist. I wanted to share some resources that… Continue

New Old Technology

Ollas are unglazed earthenware pots that provide slow deep water released directly to plant roots.

As the weather heats up, I’ve been thinking about how to stretch the growing season for my greens and am turning to container gardening. Containers are great because they… Continue

Dining a la Permaculture

Odds N Ends from the Garden- Cauliflower Leaves!

Hi All,

I am cleaning out the Winter garden in preparation for the Spring plantings (I know, should have done this a couple weeks ago!) and was overwhelmed with the amount of Cauliflower leaves my plants produced!

Dining a la Permaculture!

A Basic Permaculture Meal…

Hello All,

Welcome to my new blog topic “Dining a la Permaculture” where I’ll share some of my kitchen exploits as we come up with new ways to use all the good stuff that we’re growing. Thanks Karl, Doreen and Connie for the inspiration to start on this topic!

So, I thought I would start with an oldie, but a goodie, the omelet! When you can use fresh eggs from your very own hens, life doesn’t get much better. Today I decided to eat a meal… Continue

Hi Liz, my name is Ryan. I met you at the ASU sustainability fair. We talked about the proposed garden over at the Tempe Municipal Center. I was just checking in to see how your meetings are going.

Hi Liz,

I have been out of town for the entire summer for work, so I haven't been able to make it to any of the classes. I am planning on signing up for some classes this fall and I am going to move a large portion of my garden to the front yard (my dog was a little too interested in the one I planted in the back yard). I have a lot to learn still, but the resources on this site are incredible...I have learned so much just by reading about other peoples' successes/failures/lessons. Many thanks again for introducing me to this group!

(My company, Ernst & Young, sponsors a charity/club on a quarterly basis. This quarter, it is the Permaculture Guild...I'm looking forward to taking part in that!)

My dad watered when we were in MT and most stuff wasn't looking to good when we returned. Most of the zucchini have given up. The tomatoes are still looking good, but not as tasty. The herbs and cucumbers are doing well and the citrus are looking pretty sharp.

How about your garden? We need to get together!!

Hi All,
For those of you who are looking for the planting calendars I mentioned on the radio this morning, please enter "planting calendar" into the search function at the top right of the web page. You can find it under the entry "Low Desert Planting & Harvest Calendar". If that doesn't work, please don't hesitate to email me!
Cheers, Liz

Do my 6 1/2 week old Amricaunas still need a heat lamp at night if they are outside? I have moved them to a new location and I'm not sure if the extesion cord goes that far, but I will figure something out if they need heat. Thanks.

Right on. It took just over a month for that one to grow. So, if it grows at the same pace this time, the next one will be ready sometime around the first week of December.
