Pecking orders

Thank you for your response. It is good to know it wasn't just me, or me not spending enough time hand raising the little buggers. I keep them for eggs production, and spent some time handling them a…

Rachel, thanks for the advice and the class you taught. I should have plenty of room for the five birds in the run (when they get there), as there are only five and it will be 8'x21'. They will be more crowded in the summer under the shade, but if…

I think that temperament is a much more important issue than size. Of course if you end up with a small bird way down on the pecking order from some Jersey Giants or something, then that's bad news. When you say bullying, does that mean there's bloo…

I noticed I had posted my science club badge on this page. I switched it to a shot of a salmon faverolle hen, taken from my pet chicken.

Profile Information

About Me:
I live in Central Phoenix. I teach middle school: this is my first year teaching science to 7th graders. Last year, I taught writing to them. I love to read, which I had time for when I was a stay-at-home mom for many years (after I quit working as a lawyer. The "lawyering biz" pays better and is easier but teaching is much more important.) I have a husband of 27 yrs, 3 teens, many interests and not enough time. I have 9 hens, 2 parakeets, 1 cat 3 dogs 5 AZ desert tortises 2 African desert tortises, 1 bunny, and board 3 horses with a friend. I don't garden at present because I hate veggies (veggies are what food eats) and my attempts to understand how to do it in this dessert have failed so far.

This time of year, it's easy to drive around ABQ and find bagged leaves waiting for disposal by the city, at least that was the case a few years back. You only have another week or two to collect them before they're gone for another year ....

I really thought this was clever too! I would think that Craig's List would have many of these listed pretty cheap. I believe that they had 3 chickens, but this setup could handle quite a bit more, and it looks so darn cute!

She can dump out the bin in an area where she would like to create a new garden bed, preferably in a sunny location. Cover it with a black plastic bag or any other medium which will absorb the heat. Piling LOTS more leaves on top and saturating ever…
