Profile Information

About Me:
I have been composting with worms for quite some time and love to have my elementary students study them as well. They are pretty good at eating up our veggie scraps. the worms not the students.

We are rebuilding our chicken coop and hopefully have chickens soon.

I am in the process of planting my garden after a 2 year hiatus. I want to be able to use my own tomatoes , herbs, and zucchini for cooking. I also want to compost more of our scraps back into the garden.

April Brings

From the start of this renewed passion of mine I have looked forward those times I could smile and ,be proud and harvest. Today was one of those moments , after checking the chickens this morning ,I pulled off some swiss chard , sauteed it with chives and bacon and then poured scrambled eggs over it ! Delicious! My own nutritious greens !

Chicks, Man !

Well with just a little suggestion to my husband we are back to having chicks ! yeah.I enjoyed having them before and have missed the fun . Yesterday we purchased 5 chicks at Pratts, 2 Americana, 2 black and white , can't remeber and then headed over to Stock Shop and picked up a Polish and a Silky. They quickly settled into our baby coop . We put in our back garage with a lamp and they seem cozy and happy.Boy do they eat though!! My daughter has already named them all and love to peek in on the… Continue

Well Hello Permaculture..

I have slowly become more aware that many of my "farmy" interests are not only fun but beneficial to reducing the waste and helping the environment. years ago I was an avid gardener and raised chickens.
But pregnancy and motherhood combined with a busy life style slowed me down and I gave up my gardening interests. But the baby is quite
responsible and grown up and it's time to pursue my interests.
I ma the process of creating my garden/composting . chicken area and hope to have pictures soon of… Continue

well, the solution was to entomb them. in the end, we did nothing! they are still there and happily pollinating our garden.

Hi Debbie,
I'm actually not looking for worms myself - I'm just looking for a local source to refer others to. I've hear about this place called Wonder Worm, but can't seem to locate it. Do you have worms to share? I just taught a worm class this morning at the market, and there were a few people potentially interested in setting up worm bins... if you have any, I could put them in contact with you...

Thanks!

So true - Jane Doyle also lives in the Farms and I think there are several others over on this side of town...I have been so busy lately (and probably through May) that I am finding it hard to keep up with all that is happening on the boards - I am going to the preservation class this Saturday from 10:30 - Noon to learn how to can all these tomatoes I'm growing :)...should be ready in May.

Hi Debbie - we've lived in Sunburst farms for 2 years this May and we love it! We live between 43d & 45th Ave on Port Au Prince - the neighbors are great and the dogs and cats have a lot more room to roam. I have two gardens as of this year and we hope to build a chicken coop in the fall - how great that you are getting back into the chicks and gardening! Let me know if I can help in any way - have become a champion shoveler lately with the advent of the second garden. - we did it as frugally as possible so a lot of manual labor was involved :). My current gardens have 14 tomato plants so maybe we can swap eggs for tomatoes in a little while :). Welcome to the PermaCulture Guild - I've taken 7 or 8 classes and really enjoy it - check out Az Homegrown as well - more of a Victory Garden and community involvement slant.
