Can dried figs be harvested and eaten?

Well, we ended up using raspberry syrup last night. There just wasn't enough time to everything I wanted to, and I even planned ahead! Well, there is about a quarter of the cake left today, so I wi...

Can dried figs be harvested and eaten?

I've got a cheesecake cooking/cooling in the oven, and I need a quick topping for tonight's dessert. I've got figs, pomegranates, brandy, cream fraiche .... What can I make?

I tried the fresh figs, and wasn't that crazy about them. I offered some up to friends, but for the most part, they were eaten by the birds, and dropped to the ground. The chickens had the ground c...

It's pretty amazing how the ants can make quick work of decimating whatever they have an appetite for at any given time.

Love your observations. Thanks for sharing.

If you make smoothies figs are great for these. I freeze whole figs in zipper bags, take out however many you plan to use and let them thaw just enough to quarter them and use in place of ice in your smoothie. Good mixed with frozen bananas.

I used to live in South Scottsdale. The only thing I miss about that place is the neighbor's rooster crowing at dawn.

I don't know what's eating my spinach. Every night, someone comes and takes a huge bite right out of the middle of the the most tender leaves. I finally have lettuce sprouting all over the place. I got impatient when the first rows I sowed didn't ...

Thank you for posting, Kathy. I recently got a doorknob hanger from the City of Mesa, delivered by the Boy Scouts, with the same information. That was good news, because my blue recycle can says only 1 & 2 plastics. That's nice, I didn't like thro...

The Pomegranate Tree

We moved into our home on Veteran's day of 2008. The yard was overgrown and the house was run down, but in fairly decent condition. The pomegranate tree was looking pretty forlorn out there in the middle and back section of the yard, having not been watered for at least four years, and with all the bushy undergrowth obscuring the beauty of the tree's trunk. There were actually pomegranates on it, not very many, and to me, not particularly tasty. Well one year later, the tree is flourishing. I've… Continue

Our first full autumn in our new home.

I just finished pulling up the remnants of the remainder of the bermuda grass growing in our first garden bed. We moved into our half-century-old house on Veteran's Day of 2008. I transplanted all of the pepper plants I had been nurturing in pots while we languished in a rental home in South Scottsdale. The peppers were frying on the plants over the summer, but recently I've been able to harvest and roast some to eat in omelettes and as a topping on our pizza.

What a surprise to find the tilth… Continue

I know how you feel , this house is a rental and we know we can stay here for a long time, the owner is in canada and has no plans to sell. but still we are hesitant in doing too much improvement on the land. It's nice to have the pool and I will repair the pond for my own pleasure.but Chris is torn on if we are going to plant any trees on the property. Our goal is to buy in the next year, but we want a place that has some property to it where we can have chickens and no one will bother us . this area is a good site because it's old horse property

Hi Anita, glad you joined the group. You will find a lot of valuable info, great classes, and meet some very nice people. I seem to be the only one selling worms lately and have sold off so many of the larger ones I need to let them multiply and grow a little bit longer. It takes them three months from hatching to mature and breed. I have three bins going and just checked them and think if I give them another month I will be in good shape to sell some more. I am glad Roxannes is having some success with hers. I will put a note on the site when I think I can start supplying them again. Chris

Hi Anita, I am sorry but I only got 250 worms to start with and they haven't started to multiply until just recently. I did buy mine from Chris and she can probably sell some to you also. http://www.phoenixpermaculture.org/forum/topic/listForContributor?user=3v6pyi6ovev2y

I know the hardest part seems to be finding worms locally.

Hi Lynn - one pot big enugh for three herbs. One that is about 15 inches across at the top would work perfect!

I get those too. I think they're cabbage loopers. Other than picking them off by hand, I'm had also been spraying the leave with bT. My latest strategy is to spread out some diatomaceous earth atop the soil and plants. Hoping that will help.

I just went out and bought more frost cloth today as it is usually December we get our first frosts. Last year was so mild though I have been wondering how this year will be!

Sue, great! My swiss chard is just starting out and I can't wait for it as it is one of my favorite veggies! I often wonder whether to leave things longer to see what they will do, your swiss chard being a great example of that!

You know, I don't know exactly what it was but was rather surprised that it grew so big because it didn't bear any resemblance to any of the pumpkins I seeded! We didn't eat it, but saved it to carve for Halloween. It held up pretty well too for t...

My swiss chard is amazing, it was good during the summer, but it has gone crazy since its cooled off. I jumped the gun and pulled out my zucchini plants, sorry I did that now, reading what others are experiencing.

Oops, sorry about your zukes Dana. I am getting many tomatillo's now, they seem to like it cooler because in the summer they grew big, had lots of flowers, but produced no fruit. Feast or famine right? :)
