As soon as you give them support, they grab on! I had a flash of inspiration and harvested some old, skinny bamboo stalks that were dried out and branching. I wrapped my tomato vines up the sturdier…

Failures in the Garden

I've only recently been companion planting, and I understand completely about patches in our garden beds. I've patched in so many different seeds, I can't clearly identify many of the new plants that…

Failures in the Garden

My biggest obstacle to having success in the garden has been moving from place to place over the years, without seeing the long-term results of my efforts. Oftentimes, when I have visited my prior ho…

I've never claimed not to be the pre-packaged girl. I like my boneless, skinless chicken breast from Sam's. I like my clean eggs in styrofoam containiers, especially now that they can be recycled! I will never use humanure. I'm just trying to do my…

Personally, I am not the slightest bit concerned about hygiene (chicken poop germs). Sometimes the eggs are covered in it. I am also not concerned about using the compost straight out from under the chickens with their poop straight onto my beds. No…

Check out my pictures. If you are looking for a quick and easy coop, you can use a dog kennel like we purchased from Lowes. We put a top on it to help shelter from the rain. It's a perfect size for our yard and very sturdy. We did have to build a co…

Those baby chicks grew up into chickens! I really like them, but they are messy creatures. I no longer like my back porch. I no longer like my compost heap. I certainly didn't know they could produce their body weight in manure over three months tim…

Yes, the lemons are yellow, the grapefruits are golden, the tangerines are orange and oh-so-sweet! My greens are just getting going as well. I love fresh salad with citrus dressing.

This time of year, it's easy to drive around ABQ and find bagged leaves waiting for disposal by the city, at least that was the case a few years back. You only have another week or two to collect them before they're gone for another year ....

Thanks, Chris. So, I found this great website (http://ag.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/mg/index.html) and it has a whole index of plants and their years of seed viability. Most of my seeds still fall in the good range, so I guess I'm gonna have to attribu…

I'm considering a pecan tree (it's deciduous), or chinese pistache, or a lime tree ... (so much to do!). The worst is when you rake up a big pile of leaves, and a big gust of wind comes through and scatters them all over creation once again. I feel…

I'm working on it, Chris. We don't have 100 SF just yet, but a reasonable sized plot for a family of three. We currently have sprouts and fairly well-developed parsley, cilantro, radishes, chives, lettuce, spinach, nasturtians, kale, potatoes, carro…

The Pomegranate Tree

We moved into our home on Veteran's day of 2008. The yard was overgrown and the house was run down, but in fairly decent condition. The pomegranate tree was looking pretty forlorn out there in the middle and back section of the yard, having not been watered for at least four years, and with all the bushy undergrowth obscuring the beauty of the tree's trunk. There were actually pomegranates on it, not very many, and to me, not particularly tasty. Well one year later, the tree is flourishing. I've… Continue

Our first full autumn in our new home.

I just finished pulling up the remnants of the remainder of the bermuda grass growing in our first garden bed. We moved into our half-century-old house on Veteran's Day of 2008. I transplanted all of the pepper plants I had been nurturing in pots while we languished in a rental home in South Scottsdale. The peppers were frying on the plants over the summer, but recently I've been able to harvest and roast some to eat in omelettes and as a topping on our pizza.

What a surprise to find the tilth… Continue

I know how you feel , this house is a rental and we know we can stay here for a long time, the owner is in canada and has no plans to sell. but still we are hesitant in doing too much improvement on the land. It's nice to have the pool and I will repair the pond for my own pleasure.but Chris is torn on if we are going to plant any trees on the property. Our goal is to buy in the next year, but we want a place that has some property to it where we can have chickens and no one will bother us . this area is a good site because it's old horse property

Hi Anita, glad you joined the group. You will find a lot of valuable info, great classes, and meet some very nice people. I seem to be the only one selling worms lately and have sold off so many of the larger ones I need to let them multiply and grow a little bit longer. It takes them three months from hatching to mature and breed. I have three bins going and just checked them and think if I give them another month I will be in good shape to sell some more. I am glad Roxannes is having some success with hers. I will put a note on the site when I think I can start supplying them again. Chris

Hi Anita, I am sorry but I only got 250 worms to start with and they haven't started to multiply until just recently. I did buy mine from Chris and she can probably sell some to you also. http://www.phoenixpermaculture.org/forum/topic/listForContributor?user=3v6pyi6ovev2y

I know the hardest part seems to be finding worms locally.
