Hi David - sorry it too so long to get back to you - the grass has died and we think it was a combination of acidic chicken poop, not enough water and not enough direct sun. The chickens actually seem to like it better without the grass being green, and I rake it every couple of weeks and deposit the droppings in the composter. If we were to do it again I would probably just put sand in there. We are using some hay my sister had for the bedding in the coop and that is working out great - it absorbs the poop and cuts down on any smells. We noticed one mouse a while back near the feed (which is in sealed plastic buckets) but with 4 cats I don't think that will be a problem for long.

What a beautiful hen house and coop! That is definitely one to be proud of. I'm interested in knowing how your grass is doing. I'd like to put grass under my chicken run/coop, and I wonder if the chickens will eat, scratch, and dig it down to dirt over time. Is the roof plastic over a wood frame? Which materials, where from, and approximately how much? Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for all the nice comments - it has been about 3 weeks and we are very happy with it - the grass is a bit bedraggled but holding up and the pen has plenty of room for all. We have noticed the chickens really love the perches outside and the ones high on the inside so they can look out the screened windows. Looking forward to eggs...:)

It is real grass - we are actually experimenting with what the chickens like best because sand was more expensive to purchase than sod :). We have an old hand lawn mower that we will use if necessary but I suspect the chickens might eat it - not sure?

is that real grass in the pen, if so how do you plan on keeping it mowed?

Deeper than a pot called a 'bowl' which is too shallow for the roots when it gets hot. If you choose one that is about 15" across it will be deep enough as long as it is not a 'bowl'. Hope this helps.
